Dental implants are a reliable and long-lasting replacement for missing teeth. Most implants placed today are root form (root like) implants. They resemble a screw and are made of surgical titianium. They are surgically placed into the jaw much like a screw would be placed into a piece of wood.
What is involved in placing Dental Implants?
Although they are relatively easy to place, they involve very careful planning and numerous preliminary steps are needed to ensure success. Implant dentistry usually takes place over a series of steps or phases. The first phase is the planning phase. Your dentist will evaluate your medical history, teeth, gums and jaws to determine if you are or can become a good candidate for implants.
Often times patients will need pre-surgical procedures before the implants can be placed. This may include bone augmentation or grafting.
The next phase is the surgery to place the dental implants. After surgery there is a healing phase that takes place while your implant heals and becomes stable, this may take several months. The final phase is the "restorative phase" where the implant(s) are loaded with a crown, bridge or denture.
Just like teeth your new dental implant needs regular hygiene with scheduled care and maintenance to ensure longevity.
What a dental implant looks like
What are the benefits of dental Implants?
Dental implants will improve your appearance. The look and feel like your natural teeth. Dental implants will keep your dentures in place, making chewing and speaking easier; you will be able to eat food that you may be avoiding.
Dental implants only replace the missing tooth and will not affect the adjacent teeth like a bridge does. They are easy to clean and the long term success rate is very high.
Who can have a dental implant?
Not everybody can have dental implants; there is a minimum requirement of the width and the height of bone that is needed to place an implant. Patients that are medically compromised, heavy smokers and people who have existing gum disease may not be candidates for implants.
