Preventive dentistry is the most effective way of reducing the amount of dental treatment necessary to maintain a healthy mouth. Majority of tooth loss is attributed to gum disease and tooth decay. With preventative dentistry the dentist and hygienist can reduce the traditional pattern and other extensive dental procedures.
A course of treatment may be recommended to get your mouth into a healthy state, and a maintenance plan will be worked out to help you keep it that way.
Who would benefit from preventative dentistry?
Preventive dentistry will benefit anyone with some of their own teeth. People who don't have any teeth can also benefit because conditions such as mouth cancer can be spotted during regular visits to the dentist and then treated. It is excellent for children and young people, but it is never too late to start.
What is involved in preventative dentistry?
At Aberdeen Dental we will first assess your teeth and gums we will then discuss any treatment that you may need. The primary focus is to help you get your mouth healthy; the aim is to prevent dental problems from occurring.
The hygienist will thoroughly assess your gum and bone health and will then 'scale and polish' your teeth. The hygienist will also show you the best methods of brushing and flossing to remove the bacterial 'plaque' which forms constantly on your teeth and gums. When you eat or drink something sugary, the plaque turns the sugar into acid, which will cause tooth decay. Plaque will also cause gum inflammation and bone loss if it is not regularly and thoroughly removed. Coming in regularly will prevent the accumulation of bacteria and thereby prevent gum disease.
