Root Canals

What is root canal therapy?

Root Canal therapy or endodontics is a branch of dentistry that involves problems that occur in the soft inner portion of the tooth. The tooth pulp is where the nerve and blood vessels of the tooth exist. This tissue can become inflamed due to infection or damage. This inflammation can become prolonged and painful. In this situation root canal therapy (removal of the pulp) may be necessary to relieve symptoms and save the affected tooth.

What is involved?

The dentist will need to numb the tooth that requires the root canal; they will then isolate the area with a rubber dam to protect the surrounding tissue from the medications needed to clean inside the tooth.

The dentist will use a series of instruments and medications to clean the canals and will then fill the canals with a plastic like material. Once the root canal is completed the tooth will require a filling or crown to close the tooth. In most cases crowns are recommended as teeth become brittle and are prone to breaking once root canal therapy is completed.

What to expect after you have a root canal?

After the root canal is completed you may experience a mild level of discomfort. This pain is temporary and can be relieved with medication.

Do root canals hurt?

The procedure of root canal therapy should be like any procedure in dentistry, once the local anaesthetic is administered and the tooth becomes numb, you should not feel anything during the procedure. It is important that you communicate with the dentist if you do feel discomfort.

What would happen if I did not have the root canal completed?

If you put off a root canal, the infection inside the tooth will eventually destroy the surrounding bone and tissue. More seriously, the infection can cause severe harm to your overall health.
