The best time to handle issues with wisdom teeth emerging is before they cause serious problems. At Aberdeen Dental Centre, our team has the knowledge and expertise to help patients in the Vernon, BC area when it comes time to deciding about wisdom teeth extraction.
What are wisdom teeth and why can they be a problem?
Wisdom teeth, also called the third molars, are the last set of molars to emerge. In many cases, wisdom teeth that are left on their own to erupt can cause serious complications. Even when the teeth can fully emerge, they can push neighboring teeth which can be painful and affect alignment. Wisdom teeth can increase the risk of decay due to overcrowding and the inability to reach them easily for proper oral hygiene.
When a person’s mouth does not have enough room for wisdom teeth to emerge, they can remain stuck below the surface of the gums. This is called impacted wisdom teeth. If the wisdom teeth begin to emerge, but not fully, we call it partial impaction.
When evaluating impacted wisdom teeth, x-rays are taken and reviewed. If we decide they need to be removed, we will schedule the extraction.
Wisdom teeth extractions are a straightforward procedure that can be completed in-office with local anesthetic. Nitrous oxide or oral sedation is available for patients who have dental anxiety. During the procedure, a small incision is made to access and remove each molar. The empty sockets will then be closed and gauze is used to reduce bleeding and swelling. Patients are sent home with instructions on how to care for the surgical site.
